Live Blog: Appalachian State at Michigan

College Football returns in full force today as Michigan opens up its 2014 season against Appalachian State. Most fans remember the last time these two teams met in 2007 when Appalachian State upset U-M 34-32.

But enough about the past, this is where I will be live-blogging throughout the duration of the game. Feel free to chime away in the comments section.

Live Blog:

Both teams have taken the field as they warm up in their respective zones. Of note, Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess will be wearing No. 1 this season.

Don't forget the game starts at Noon ET and you can watch it on ESPN2/WatchESPN.
Brady Hoke is 8-3 in home openers all-time as a head coach and has won six in a row, including a 3-0 mark at Michigan.

It is very humid on the field at Michigan Stadium, so expect cramping to be an issue for some players.

Michigan playing the same entrance music as South Carolina lol.

Michigan's defense is up to the challenge of Appalachian State's spread attack as it forces a three and out.

Nice screen pass from Gardner to Funchess for a 12-yard gain.

Off-setting penalties on Michigan and App State as Devin Gardner took a hit out of bounds.

Derrick Green tripped up for a loss on his second rush of the season.

Gardner showing poise in the pocket with a pretty throw to Jehu Chesson for a first down in the red zone.

Michigan answered its goal line woes from last season early as Gardner finds Funchess in the end zone for a 9-yard TD.

Extra point is good as U-M leads App. State 7-0 with 8:48 to go in the opening quarter. Also, a good sign to see Devin Gardner convert on two third-down plays in the first drive of the season.

On App. State's first play of the drive, Terrence Upshaw busts up the middle for a 26-yd gain.

An App. State penalty has stalled the drive as it is facing a 3rd and 23 at its own 40-yd line.

Roughing the punter on Michigan as it results in an automatic first down for ASU at the Mich. 45. Michigan is still up 7-0 with 5:52 left in the first quarter.

Commentator Dan Dierdorf was just introduced to the Michigan Stadium crowd during the timeout.

Michigan's defense holds twice in a row as they get the ball at their own 22.

Devin Funchess with an amazing leap out of bounds for a gain of 18 yards.
De'Veon Smith with room up the middle for a 15-yd gain.

A beautiful rollout on playaction by Devin Gardner as he finds Funchess towards the sidelines and stiff-armed a defender for a 34-yd TD pass. Michigan makes the XP as it leads App. State 14-0 with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

Kam Bryant unable to get into a groove as the Mountaineers go three and out.

Jabril Peppers' first return saw him allude several defenders only to return it six yards.

Michigan's running backs Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith have been able to find some running lanes at ease thus far.

Gardner with a simple handoff to Justice Hayes for a loss of one yards as U-M is forced to punt.

Jehu Chesson just laid the wood on ASU's BoBo Beathard on the punt return.

QB Kam Bryant unable to find any room as Chris Wormley tackles him for a loss of a yard.

Chris Wormley has been the most impressive Wolverine defensive player thus far. He has been able to plug gaps and stay in assignments.

Well, the ASU timeout didn't help as Taco Charlton came up to the middle to sack Bryant as they are forced to punt.

Fun fact: Funchess is the first player since Braylon Edwards in 2004 to wear No. 1.

Gardner moving U-M into ASU territory once more, but was unable to connect with Funchess on 3rd and 11.

U-M's kicking woes continue as Matt Wile's 48-yard FG goes off the right crossbar. U-M still leads 14-0 with 7:23 left in the second quarter.

I think it is safe to say the transition from TE to WR for Funchess has been very swift and easy.

A couple of nifty moves as Derrick Green goes down the sidelines for a 62-yd gain to begin the second half.

Michigan is challenging whether or not De'Veon Smith knee touched the ground after crossing the plane.

The ruling on the field stands and Michigan has no more challenges to use for the remainder of the game.

Derrick Green goes up the middle and pounds it in from a yard out to make it 42-0 U-M.

Derrick Green now has 157 yards on 13 carries and a TD for U-M. The question becomes when does Hoke pull Devin Gardner from the game to rest him up for the Notre Dame game next Saturday night.

Shane Morris now enters the game for U-M in place of Devin Gardner late in the third.

Morris then responds with a bad throw as he is picked off by ASU's Donte Blackmon.

QB Taylor Lamb enters the game for Kam Bryant as the third quarter ends with U-M leading ASU 49-7.
