North Carolina/Illinois time machine: Sept. 5, 1987

Welcome to another edition of CSO's time machine as we focus on the Sept. 5, 1987 meeting between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Here are some notable highlights from 1987:

- The average price of gas was $0.95/gallon

- The Edmonton Oilers won their third Stanley Cup by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in seven games.

- Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" single was released.

Takeaways from Illinois/North Carolina on Sept. 5, 1987:

- North Carolina's season-opening win was short lived as it would suffer a 28-0 shutout at Oklahoma the following week.

- North Carolina finished 5-6 (3-4 ACC) and failed to make a bowl game 

- The 34-14 loss began the downward spiral for Illinois as it started the season 1-4 and finished 3-7-1 (2-5-1 Big Ten).
