Big East mid-week recap for Dec. 20

With final exams in the rearview mirror, Big East schools returned to their normal slate of action this week and plenty of great games on the docket this weekend highlighted by Friday’s showdown in Milwaukee between undefeated and No. 14 Buffalo at No. 20 Marquette.

Tuesday, Dec. 18:

Georgetown 83, Appalachian State 73

- Three Hoya players finished in double digits scoring, highlighted by 17 points from James Akinjo as they pulled away in the final two minutes to secure the win.

Providence 73, Albany 43

- Despite a lethargic start in the first half, the Friars leaned on a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double effort from Alpha Diallo in the 30-point win.

Missouri 71, Xavier 56

- The Musketeers’ non-conference struggles continued as the Missouri Tigers used a 17-0 run in the first half to pull in a 15-point win.

Quentin Goodin provided the lone bright spot for Xavier with a career-high 21 points and six assists.

Butler 76, Presbyterian 67

- The streak of non-conference wins at Hinkle Fieldhouse increased to 49 straight games behind a career-high 18 points and seven assists from Aaron Thompson.

No. 20 Marquette 92, North Dakota 66

- The continued growth of Ed Morrow in Marquette’s rotation was on full display as the Nebraska transfer finished with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Markus Howard scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 from the field as the Golden Eagles won their sixth straight contest.

Oklahoma 83, Creighton 70

- Known for its precise three-point shooting over the years, the Creighton Bluejays looked skeletal as it missed its first 12 three-point attempts and could not recover in a 13-point loss to the rising Oklahoma Sooners.

Martin Krampelj finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Creighton in defeat.

Wednesday, Dec. 19:

St. John’s 86, St. Francis, N.Y. 52

- The Red Storm engineered its biggest victory of the season behind L.J. Figueroa and Greg Williams Jr. with 13 points each and held the Terriers to 27.7 percent from the field.

Seton Hall 90, Sacred Heart 76

- It was the Sandro Mamukelashvili show as the sophomore notched a career-high 23 points on 8-of-11 from the field, to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.

DePaul 81, Incarnate Word 71

- It has been home cooking for the Blue Demons as they improved to 8-0 at Wintrust Arena this season behind 20 points from Eli Cain.

Max Strus highlighted the other four Blue Demon players in double figures with 18 points as DePaul is off to its best start since the 2002-03 season.
